2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Developer to Boost Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos
2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Follows Mixed Feedback
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified employees about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a more defined game identity.
Ismailer noted that the developers is now refining the project with a renewed focus, aiming to address community desires.
Trend of Strategic Hires
The news mirrors a comparable move taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock development group.
Here is the complete content from the president's communication:
Team—
I know you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to continue.”
Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last fall’s the game demo was informative. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a more distinct brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the criticism to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s ready to achieve its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To further the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the incoming Director of the team. Following some time of conversations, he comes aboard us on next week.
Ben’s guidance and background in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having spent the recent years creating and leading some of the most popular titles in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in receiving Ben next week. We are all excited to persist seeing the progress of the game in the weeks to come.
David

The game lacks an announced launch window or consoles, but enthusiasts can anticipate additional details as creation advances.
