The climate advocate has suggested that concern of being bullied from Donald Trump may have led Bill Gates to retreat on his environmental stance.
Labeling Trump as “the most corrupt president in American history”, Gore cautioned that the president’s support of fossil fuels and withdrawal from renewable energy is “badly damaging” the U.S. economy.
Climate Damage and Financial Consequences
In an conversation at the Cop30 United Nations climate summit, Gore remarked, “Trump’s currently causing a lot of damage to the environment. Maybe the largest impact he’s doing is to the U.S. itself.”
He pointed out that the Asian nation is now exporting eco-friendly innovations with a cumulative export value that outstrips all oil and gas shipments from the United States, a trend that is speeding up quite dramatically.
Bill Gates’ Controversial Shift
Bill Gates, previously a prominent advocate in climate action, recently argued for moving the environmental emergency down the international agenda, to focus on health issues.
Gore expressed bewilderment at this shift, saying, “The idea of slowing down on climate further puzzled every climate scientist that I know and respect.”
“Yeah, Trump loves it. It’s possible what Gates was shooting for.”
Gore noted that after Trump’s re-election, Gates fired the majority of his environmental team, visited the White House, and lavished praise on Trump.
Fear of Reprisal
Gore suggested that Gates, like many wealthy executives, may be fearful of facing retaliation by Trump. “It may be that he is really worried that Trump will bully him,” Gore stated.
Trump responded to Gates’ reversal with supportive online comments.
Gore added, “The sole positive feedback of what he released last week was from the president. Yeah, Trump loves it. Perhaps what Gates was shooting for.”
Challenging a Misleading Dichotomy
Gore stressed that presenting the climate crisis and worldwide health issues as competing priorities is incorrect.
“The idea that there is a binary choice between health and climate has been roundly rejected by nearly all experts in this field,” he explained.
“It’s completely irrational that governments are requiring taxpayers to subsidise the destruction of part of humanity’s future.”
Gore highlighted that the Lancet published a report on the same day as Gates’ announcement, detailing the significant wellness impacts of inaction on climate.
Advocating for Smarter Investments
Rather than diverting funds from climate action, Gore suggested that Gates should push for repurposing the hundreds of billions spent on fossil fuel subsidies toward wellness and climate solutions.
“Accelerating solutions to the climate crisis is one of the single most effective ways to improve healthcare in the world,” he stated.
Defending the UN Climate Process
Gore robustly defended the annual Cop meetings, explaining that they achieve significant results than they are recognized for.
“These global meetings serves as a nucleus for businesses and organizations that gather every year,” he remarked. “Many of them come up with their own agreements that move things forward.”
“The Cop process itself is one of the principal reasons that the green transition has accelerated significantly.”
He continued that industries and governments are moving forward with innovations and implementing renewable energy and other eco-friendly projects.
Positive Progress and Generational Change
Gore celebrated what he sees as a “generational change” in the United States, with many people turning towards climate action even as the federal government dismantles them.
He warned that Trump might face a “less obsequious” Congress following recent voting losses for GOP contenders.
“There’s a completely false view out there that in some way we are losing ground.”
Gore praised Zohran Mamdani for his effective campaign for NYC leadership, noting that while he did not agree with some of his ideas, his campaign abilities were impressively on display.
A Visual Warning at Cop30
At the conference, Gore presented delegates with a visual presentation of devastation caused by the climate crisis.
In front of a large display showing pictures of recent catastrophes worsened by climate change, Gore declared, “It is literally insane that we are letting this persist.”
He raised his voice while showing visuals of record drought in the Amazon, melting polar ice, and destructive storms in Vietnam, the Caribbean, Brazil, the Pacific nation, and the United States.
“How long are we going to stand by and keep turning the thermostat up so that these sort of events get more severe?” he asked.
Preparing for Climate Impacts
Gore stressed the need to prepare and prevent, but cautioned that if this irrational behavior continues—using the sky as an open sewer—some things will be very difficult to cope with.
Advancing Emissions Tracking
His main focus at the summit has been to promote the Climate Trace project, which tracks planet-heating emissions and air pollutants causing wellness issues globally.
“There is great enthusiasm about these new tools,” Gore stated. “We have got the tools and the deployment models. A few individuals think we lack the political will, but as I like to point out, political will is a replenishable asset.”
