Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "They were among thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
