"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There is only a single issue: I also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're far from alone. Multiple famous fans have also begged for the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the best ensembles, they're a close trio. Their music videos frequently depict them walking in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such unfettered happiness you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage others to start a band."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the next part of the family."

Award Nod

The group are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I watch the lists every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that unique liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words detail breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That newfound resilience demanded a fresh approach – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's candor shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international audience.

But Haim will forever be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
