The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
