Stuart Broad has confessed that he hasn't figured out a consistent plan to get out the Australian star and states that the historic series could become a lengthy battle if England cannot dismiss the batter early in his innings.

Smith's Remarkable Career

The 36-year-old batsman, recognized as one of the finest batters of this generation, maintains an impressive average of over 56 in England-Australia contests with 12 hundred-run innings to his name.

Smith, having played in all Ashes contests since 2010-11, was the top scorer during the 2017-18 and subsequent 2019 matches, registering substantial run tallies while the English bowler was in the national team.

Broad's Frustration

"It's vivid in my memory when he made that substantial innings in Perth during 2017 and every delivery seemed to hit the sweet spot for the full duration," Broad shared on an interview.

"Whatever I bowled I aimed just connected his bat's middle."

"Smith has developed that particular mindset of the wicket works for me, and I won't be dismissed."

Record-Breaking Performance

The English bowler succeeded in removing his opponent 11 instances in Test matches - three more than competing pitchers - yet admits he hasn't identified a reliable method.

The batsman's lifetime average of just over 56 climbs to 59.70 when on home soil. Just the iconic Ricky Ponting with 41 tons has registered higher figures than 36 hundred-run innings for Australia.

Facing the Batting Genius

Broad remarked: "Clearly his method has developed throughout his career, but I remain unable to confidently state here's the method to get him out."

"That represents a remarkable quality of his. He's exceptionally difficult to bowl against. On occasion you feel like you haven't delivered a poor ball and it nevertheless travels to the boundary."

Current Performance and Readiness

His output dipped somewhat between June 2023 and December 2024 when he went 23 batting opportunities without a Test century, but he recovered with double tons against India in the previous season and made 131 and 141 runs against Sri Lanka at early 2025.

Following a two-month break, he began his buildup for this year's Ashes in the end of October and quickly registered 118 runs in his comeback match.

Game Plan

"For series victory, we must restrict his scoring to less than 50, correct?" Broad pondered.

"He'll inevitably get a ton, that's what he does."

"Should he maintain forty, that represents at least 15 below his career average, so your strategy is working. I believe it's crucial to dismiss him early in his innings."

"If England don't succeed in his dismissal within the first forty scoring shots, it's going to be an extended contest."

Changing Strategies

England has experimented with multiple strategies to combat Smith's unique style during 14 Ashes series matches.

Broad revealed creating a fresh away-swinger aimed at Smith before the previous encounter, while England has targeted the area around his legs, bowled wide from the off-side and even attempted the leg gully position during that year's matches - matches in which the batsman commenced with back-to-back hundreds at the Birmingham ground.

Key Memories

"I recall when Jason Roy was placed at that close leg-side position, and he repeatedly dove side to side for the first 30 deliveries, barely failing to catch multiple times," the bowler remembered.

"Smith escaped, got double tons in that contest, remarkable performances."

Broad added: "I recall sitting in a strategy session about Steve Smith in 2017-18 and someone mentioned 'oh, you could try targeting his wickets early'}."

"Interesting suggestion, could we examine the frequency with which his stumps have been hit in Australia during the previous five seasons?' Only one time."

Fast Bowling Option

The next encounter, commencing in the Western Australian city (specific timing), seems set to include the batsman confronting the English fast bowler for their initial test meeting since that year, when he was famously troubled and hit by a short ball during the England paceman's fierce spell at Lord's.

Smith regularly mentions that the bowler didn't get him in that game - he temporarily retired and got out later lbw to Chris Woakes upon resuming his innings - though Arcer did manage to have him caught on the pull shot in an ODI during last year.

"Can Jofra Archer provide the answer?" Broad wondered. "Making him nick from back of a length, following the delivery."

"Because Jofra Archer possesses that angle of moving inward toward the target, could he produce one that moves away? Smith's anticipating the inward movement."
