Just as bad weather hit the north-west the previous evening, City overwhelmed United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing 3-0 victory for the City coach's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their championship potential as they strengthened their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Setbacks for United

This scoreline marked back-to-back WSL defeats for the United manager's side for the first time since spring 2024, placing them a sizable gap off the top team with their title hopes in serious doubt.

United’s capacity to balance league and continental football with a thin squad has been a frequently analyzed issue since they earned a place in the Champions League. Considering the calendar, it always felt like this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this ability. Sadly for the away side, they looked fatigued throughout, the historic win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a several adjustments. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all added vigor, although the dropping of the in-form Malard to the sidelines caused surprise.

The hosts, in opposition, have no similar fitness concerns. Jeglertz made a single alteration from the previous win over the Toffees with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since recovering from injury.

Overpowering Start

The storm clouds started to build for Skinner and his team from the first whistle. This was a demonstration of the quality from City whose energetic offense played with and pulled the visitors apart with a superb initial 45 minutes display that saw them score three goals in under half an hour.

This put the hosts in a commanding position and saw the visitors all at sea. Prior to this fixture, United had conceded just a handful in this WSL season but they disintegrated in the presence of Manchester City's offensive ingenuity.

Opening Threats

The early indicators came early when Miedema used her strength to push Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot past the post. Lauren Hemp was at the center of everything in the beginning, exploiting the space left by Riviere down United’s right flank. Her deliveries were posing a threat and led to an attempt for Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg kicked off the line.

The Red Devils had a number of sorties forwards, their straightforward approach giving them options in the wings but they could not challenge Ayaka Yamashita. City, on the other hand, controlled possession, taunting their opposition and trying to lure them of their organization.

The clearest substitution came from Skinner at the break as Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the match. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came nearest, hitting the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and did not manage to record a single shot on goal.

The home side, in contrast, could have added to their lead when a superb Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the winning team. After failing to beat any team who placed above them last season, the manager's side now have successes against the Gunners and Manchester United to put them in a favorable situation after the opening fixtures.
